In light of Tokyopop’s demise, here’s some art from the book I’ve been busting my ass on for the last six months while juggling a full-time job. Slow goin’ but I’m getting permanent part time on May 2nd at the PR firm I’ve been working at, and in the afternoons and evening, I’ll now be working out of a brand spankin’ new studio, and then it’s just inks and colors from here on out, baby!
Cheers to their demise, I guess! They did a lot of good for manga in North America, but they severely botched the original content side. I was horrified to hear all the trouble you went through with them.
Hearing your experiences put a swift end to any thoughts of getting my isht together for a RSOM contribution. It worked out best for me, since I'm now making money on my comics now while maintaining a tight grip on my IP. Thanks for being up front about everything, and just being awesome in general.
Congrats on the recent progress!
Whoo hoo! Glad to see some new work! That's awesome that you're going to have more time. Full-time does suck up a lot of your day.
This just looks awesome. Excited to see it when its done!!
If tokyopop goes under does that mean you and all the other artists will get their full rights to their works back?
Awesome demise? I'm not sure I would even know your art and dozens of other artists art without Tokyopop. The company was kind of a necessary evil.
It looks great--looking forward to seeing the rest. And congrats on the permanent part-time gig!
Wow, the work is really beautiful. The expressions are so intense!
Tokyopop did allow me to find a great group of manga artists that I probably wouldn't have found otherwise :) I still make an effort to follow most of the artists including yourself in your art careers since the end of OEL manga. If only Stu would do the right thing and return all the IPs back to the creators.
Also Steady Beat is getting praise from Erica Friedman and Lissa Patillo on an ANN Podcast about Tokyopop. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/anncast/2011-04-22
You can hear about it at 22:25 area.
Those are awesome pages btw I can't wait for it to be available in print :) I'll be sure to buy one!
Riv, did you get rights back for Steadybeat? You should totally go live with the content if so. Loved your work on that title.
I've been out of the publishing and manga world for so long, I don't really know what's going on any more.
Maybe one day I will find the rest of Steady Beat...
I think I had a few volumes somewhere. >_< I've moved so many times. If I find them, I will be glad to send them.
